The Mausoleum at Halicarnassus

The Mausoleum at Halicarnassus is remembered as one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. Built in the 4th century BC for Carian satrap Mausolus and his wife Artemisia II, the monumental tomb lent its name to the rulers’ memory and became the origin of the Latin word mausoleum.

Today you can visit the mausoleum area near Turgutreis Street in central Bodrum, among the remains of ancient Halicarnassus. Stone blocks, column bases and displayed finds hint at Hellenistic grandeur. Much of the mausoleum was lost over time to earthquakes and quarrying, but some stone used in Bodrum Castle is thought to have come from here—linking castle and mausoleum in history.

On our Segway tours we offer an outside approach to the mausoleum with guided commentary; museum access and rules may vary. If you want to know Bodrum beyond the beach, this layered story appears as a short stop on our route.

Bodrum Castle

Also known as St. Peter’s Castle, the fortification was strengthened over the centuries, notably by the Knights Hospitaller; thick walls, towers and moat traces are still visible. The castle is world-famous for both its defence architecture and the Museum of Underwater Archaeology.

Antique stone from Mausolus’s tomb complex is thought to have been reused here; Bodrum is a city where “history is written in layers”. The silhouette rising from the sea is one of the city’s most recognisable shots from the waterfront or hills on a Segway.

Myndos Gate and stone passage

Myndos Gate

Myndos Gate is one of the important passages in the ancient walls of Halicarnassus. Part of the city defences strengthened in the time of King Mausolus, today its stone arch and historic setting welcome visitors.

The gate once controlled the road toward Myndos; now it is surrounded by narrow streets and bougainvillea, a frequent stop on walking and Segway routes. At sunset the light on the stone is especially attractive to photographers.

Bodrum whitewashed streets

Bodrum’s hidden streets

A few streets back from the bar strip, whitewashed houses, stone paving and bougainvillea-lined alleys begin. The pace slows here—café fronts, small galleries and traces of local life.

When entering these streets on a Segway, respect for pedestrians, controlled speed and your guide’s cues come first. Our route combines surfaces safe for riding with postcard views between the castle area and the centre.

Segway safety: what to know

Before the tour a short training session repeats balance, acceleration and stance. Helmets and required gear are provided; on shared paths we stay within legal and considerate limits.

  • Use the Segway only on routes approved by your guide.
  • Reduce speed on pavements and in crowds; pedestrians have priority.
  • Tell the team about health conditions before the tour; pregnancy or balance issues may need a different arrangement.
  • In summer especially, plan for sun and hydration.

At Bodrum Segway Tour we aim to show you the city with both fun and predictable safety.

Segway tour on the waterfront promenade

Why Bodrum by Segway?

As close as walking, more flexible than a bus: a Segway lets you comfortably link centre, waterfront and historic stops in one day. Short climbs and a breezy coastal strip are manageable with balanced riding, the right equipment and a guide.

We keep groups small so there is time to ask questions and take photo breaks. See durations and prices on our Tours page.

Gümbet windmills and Bodrum from the hills

Stone windmills on the hills along the Gümbet–Bodrum line are famous for bay and peninsula views. The silhouette shifts with wind and light—especially striking near sunset.

On longer tours we pass this line at a controlled pace with photo stops; guide direction is essential in tight turns.

Marina and waterfront: Bodrum’s pulse

Myndos Marina and the promenade show the city’s dynamic side—yacht traffic, piers and open sea views. In the evening lights and breeze bring the walk and cafés to life.

On our Segway routes we use the waterfront with care for pedestrians and service traffic, keeping safe distance and speed.

Ancient theatre and harbour view

Bodrum’s ancient theatre stands out for its position overlooking the harbour and city skyline. Seating cut into the rock reflects Hellenistic and Roman periods. It may be open to visitors at certain times depending on events; check official sources for current hours and tickets.

On our tours we plan the approach to the theatre area from outside or as a short stop, with a brief historical overview from your guide.
